We shall not cease from exploration
And at the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
—T.S. Eliot
After many years of internal wrangling, I am starting a blog. In many ways I don’t want to do this. I fear my pride and that I am simply adding to the noise. Through the years, however, I have been encouraged to share these gifts and am realizing that it is time that my words move beyond the sketches in my notebooks into the larger world.
I spent a lot of time thinking about the shape of this space in order to accommodate the many streams that infiltrate the river of my life. These chosen emblems–cairn, eagle, and home–represent three broad streams where my energies live:
- Cairn: Adventures–Outdoors & Otherwise
- Eagle: Reflections–Heart & Spirit
- Home: Endeavors–Creative & Culinary
I have separate posts to further explain the significance of these emblems, but here I will simply say that each of these aspects of my life informs the other–the outdoor adventures provide a medium for my experiments in the kitchen–the fruits of the kitchen are shared in holy hospitality–the reflection and direction of Spirit and Scripture are deepened in the wonder of creation–and so on.
No life can be organized into one simple category. The passions of our hearts will necessarily influence other aspects of our being and our being with others. My prayer is that the notes in these pages influence my being together with YOU in the very limited way that this digital medium provides. And, in turn, our being together here will influence the togetherness in your sphere and draw you deeper into the wholeness of the life to which you are called.
